What a night! Our FTO/PEP Club Spaghetti Feed & Silent Auction Fundraiser was a big success—delicious food, generous bids, and a packed house full of Orca spirit! The evening wrapped up with a fantastic performance by our Pep Club, proudly showing off their sharp new uniforms. Thanks to your support, we raised nearly $2,000 to keep the Pep Club going strong!
Next up: they’ll be marching and competing in the Forest Festival Parade on Saturday, May 30—don’t miss it!
Huge thanks to everyone who came out, donated, and cheered us on. This was an FTO-sponsored event, and we’re so grateful to our Family-Teacher Organization for making it all happen.

On Friday, Hood Canal School completed our annual flood evacuation drill—an important safety exercise in case of a Cushman Dam emergency. With help from the Washington State Patrol, Skokomish Police, and our amazing Joe Stanley, students and staff safely crossed the highways and hiked to high ground.
It was not only a great practice in preparedness, but also a fun hike in the woods and a chance to enjoy the outdoors. Big thanks to our emergency responders for keeping us safe and ready!

📣 Reminder: Friday, May 23 is a regular school day for all students. This day is being used as a snow make-up day from earlier this winter. ❄️➡️📚
We’ll see you at school! 🚌📓

🏃♀️🏃♂️ Hood Canal track & field athletes competed against students from five other schools at the district qualifiers—hosted right here at Hood Canal! 💪 Twenty of our students qualified for districts in a total of 38 events, with 13 earning 1st place finishes! 🎉 They’re now headed to the District Championships at Shelton High School on Monday, May 19 at 3:30 PM. Come cheer them on! 💙 Go Orcas! 💙

PFL Championship Game! 🏈 Today we wrapped up the inaugural season of the Hood Canal Paper Football League (PFL) with an epic championship game!
The PFL was created by bus driver “Commissioner” Brian Barden as a fun way to connect with students during lunch—and it quickly became a hit.
Over several weeks, 32 players competed in a high-stakes playoff bracket. After five rounds of exciting matchups, two finalists remained: Adalyn Sund and Kate Gouley-Miller.
They faced off at center court in the gym today, cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd. After 10 minutes of fast-paced action, Kate claimed victory with a 109–61 win to become the first-ever PFL champion! 🏆
👏 Huge congratulations to Kate, Adalyn, and all the players—and a big THANK YOU to Commissioner Brian for making this incredible new tradition possible for our students!

Our kindergarteners had a fantastic time exploring Twanoh State Park—even with the overcast skies! Thanks to our friends from the Mason Conservation District, students got hands-on learning about the amazing plants and animals that call our shoreline home.
From searching for tiny critters to learning how salmon find their way back upstream, it was a day full of curiosity, wonder, and muddy boots. Big thanks to our teachers, chaperones, and the incredible MCD team for making this outdoor adventure one to remember!

🏃♀️🐬 DISTRICT QUALIFIERS TODAY! 🐬🏃♂️ Hood Canal is hosting the district track & field qualifiers starting at 2PM with 5 schools participating! Come out and support the Orcas as they compete on their home turf! 💪🎽
🚗 Please note: Parking will be limited after school—thanks for your patience and support!

🌱 Camas Dig Connection 🌱 Last Friday, our 7th and 8th grade student volunteers joined an intertribal camas dig at the Glacial Heritage Preserve near Littlerock. Hosted as part of a three-day celebration of Native plants and traditional foods, the event brought together Tribal members from across Washington to harvest camas—a beautiful purple-flowered plant and vital traditional food for Native people.
Our students got hands-on experience harvesting camas bulbs while learning directly from Tribal members about the cultural, historical, and ecological importance of this native plant. 🌸
More than just a harvest, it was a day filled with connection—between people, the land, and traditions passed down through generations. We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn and care for the prairie together. ❤️

7th Grade Math in Action! Students in Dr. Close’s class put their probability skills to the test this week—literally! They experimented with theoretical probability by asking: ⭐️ What are the chances of pulling a blue cube from a bag? ⭐️ How likely is it that both players throw “rock” in Rock-Paper-Scissors? ⭐️What’s the probability of rolling a 6 or pulling a joker card from a deck? Hands-on math + critical thinking = a winning combination!

This week, 7th and 8th graders in Ms. Akiyama’s class explored the diet and ecosystem of barn owls by dissecting owl pellets! 🦉 Students carefully identified rodent species and examined different bones, sparking great academic discussions as they pieced together clues from their findings. Awesome focus and curiosity on display! 🔍🦴

🌟 A huge thank you to Alderbrook Resort & Spa for hosting our Builders Club students (sponsored by Hood Canal Kiwanis) for a special end-of-year celebration! 🌟
Our students were wowed by the beautiful facilities and grounds, enjoyed some beachcombing, and loved walking along the dock. 🏖️🚶♂️
They also had a wonderful meal at the restaurant, where the server took time to teach them about fine dining etiquette — including which fork to use and how to navigate the place settings. 🍽️✨
It was a fantastic day of learning, celebrating, and making memories. Thank you again, Alderbrook! 💙
