Four Decades of Impact Through Outdoor Learning, Mentorship, and Student Support

Hood Canal School District is proud to announce that Student Support Specialist Andi Bloomfield has been named the 2025 Regional Classified School Employee of the Year by Capital Region ESD 113. Selected from among 44 school districts and thousands of classified employees across the region, Bloomfield was honored for her lifelong commitment to students, families, and innovative learning.

A cornerstone of Hood Canal School for over 40 years, Bloomfield has devoted her career to creating real-world learning experiences and removing barriers so students can thrive. Now, she’s stepping into a new chapter: beginning this fall, Bloomfield will serve as Hood Canal’s 6th grade math and science teacher.

A member of the Squaxin Island Tribe, Bloomfield helped found the district’s BOOTS (Bringing Outdoor & Occupational Teachings to Students) program more than two decades ago. What began as a leadership and team-building wilderness expedition for 8th graders has grown into a district-wide outdoor education program reaching all 325 students, K–8. The program now includes four components: BOOTS, BYRDS (Bringing Youth to Riparian Destinations for Science), Jr. BOOTS, and ROOTS.

These programs have become part of the fabric of the school’s identityβ€”boosting attendance, academic achievement, leadership skills, and student engagement while reducing behavior incidents. Bloomfield’s vision connects students to the land, their learning, and one another in powerful, lasting ways.

Her award was personally presented by ESD 113 Superintendent Dr. Flip Herndon at Hood Canal’s recent school board meeting to recognize and celebrate her outstanding contributions.

β€œShe is a connector, supporter, leader, mentor, and a champion of students,” said colleagues who nominated her for the award.

Her reach goes far beyond outdoor learning. As a longtime coach of track, drill team, volleyball, and basketball, Bloomfield uses athletics to build trust and confidence in students. Her strong relationships and mentoring extend to staff as well, where she supports new supervisors, models restorative practices, and serves on the district’s strategic planning team.

β€œShe is not just a support specialistβ€”she is a mentor, an advocate, and a catalyst for lasting change,” said Principal Steven Torres. β€œWhat truly sets Andi apart is her unwavering positivity, strong ethics, and ability to uplift those around her. She approaches every challenge with a smile and a belief in every student’s potential.”

Superintendent Dr. Lance Gibbon echoed those sentiments. β€œAndi’s leadership has helped improve attendance, reduce discipline referrals, and raise student achievement across the board,” he said. β€œShe’s not only shaped our programsβ€”she’s shaped generations of students.”

Bloomfield’s work has earned her praise from current and former students alike.

β€œYou created an environment that was safe, welcoming, and full of possibility,” shared one former student. β€œYour kindness and encouragement gave us the confidence to believe in ourselves. Learning with you wasn’t just about academicsβ€”it helped us grow as individuals.”

As one of nine regional honorees statewide, Bloomfield is now in the running for Washington State Classified School Employee of the Year, which will be announced by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction this fall.

Whether she's guiding students through the wilderness, coaching from the sidelines, or supporting a child through an emotional challenge, Andi Bloomfield continues to be a force for good. Her work reflects the heart of Hood Canal Schoolβ€”and the difference one passionate educator can make.
