Hood Canal School has earned statewide recognition for its outstanding progress in closing opportunity gaps and accelerating growth for low-income students during the 2023-2024 school year. As part of the Washington School Recognition Program, Hood Canal was recognized in two categories: "Closing Gaps – Comprehensive" and "Growth for Low-Income Students."
While 16% of schools statewide received recognition this year, Hood Canal was one of just 15 schools in Washington to earn honors in both categories—an achievement that underscores the school’s commitment to meeting the needs of every student.
Bill Kallappa II, chair of the Washington State Board of Education and a proud Hood Canal alum, delivered the announcement in person during a special staff appreciation breakfast hosted by the Hood Canal School Board. The breakfast, part of Teacher Appreciation Week, featured a home-cooked meal by the board in honor of staff contributions.
“I’m so proud of everything Hood Canal has accomplished and how far the school has come,” said Kallappa, who attended Hood Canal from kindergarten through 8th grade. “This recognition reflects a remarkable team effort and deep commitment to student success.”
Hood Canal School Board President Edie Reclusado also praised the team: “We have an incredible staff here. Their dedication, teamwork, and belief in each child make all the difference—and it shows in the results we’re seeing.”
Tom Strong, CEO and Tribal Council Vice Chair for the Skokomish Tribe, echoed the praise. “This is a truly special time in Hood Canal’s history. There’s clear momentum and positive change that we haven’t seen before, and it’s making a real impact for students.”
Superintendent Lance Gibbon closed the event by thanking the staff for their heart and hard work. “Every day, you show up for kids—not just to teach, but to meet each child where they are and help them thrive. This recognition is a reflection of your unwavering commitment.”
Located in Skokomish, WA, Hood Canal School is part of a rural district that serves students in preschool through 8th grade.
The recognition is part of a statewide program run jointly by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), the State Board of Education (SBE), and the Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee (EOGOAC). Schools are selected based on key performance measures, including growth in academic achievement, closing opportunity gaps, and overall student success.
As part of the honor, Hood Canal will receive a banner to proudly display in its school building.
