Volunteers Wanted! We are always looking for parent and community volunteers at Hood Canal School to assist our staff and students in a variety of capacities. If you have an interest or experience in any of the following areas, we would appreciate your assistance.

Here are some of the ways you might volunteer at school. Don't let this list limit your imagination. We are always looking for new ideas

Health Services – Assist taking care of the health needs of our students.  (First Aid Certification required).

Office Assistance – Assist our office staff with a variety of tasks including phones, filing, errands, etc…

Attendance – Assist in notification and follow up with students and families related to the issues of attendance.

Washington Reading Corps  Help struggling readers improve their readings skills. A one on one tutoriing program, training will be provided. Contact Ali Bruner or Pat Carpenter, 877-5463 ext. 222

CASA= Community and Staff Association, much like PTA. This group meets once a month in the staff lounge on the second Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. and creates ways to support Hood Canal programs and enrichment activities. For example they hold Book Fairs at school twice annually to raise money and provide books for students and the school. CASA is looking for more Volunteers to help with these activities and others. New ideas are always welcome. Contact Karen Twiss, the CASA treasurer, at school ext. 112, for more information.

Library helpers: This year we have the services of a librarian only part timeand we very much need volunteers to help with library duties. Could be doing "Storytimes", checking books in and out, shelving books or helping with cataloging. Contact Elaine Hurst at school for more information.

Clothing Bank: Hood Canal School has a great collection of donated clothes to give away to students and families who need them. We need someone to help manage the flow of donations and the clothing room. Contact counselor Karen Farber, 877-5463 ext. 217 for information.

Playground Activities – Lead activities and games for students during recess.

Cafeteria Buddies – Sit with students and assist in supervising students during lunch or breakfast.

Landscaping – Assist our landscaping committee in planting and maintaining our plant areas around the school.

Time-Out Supervision – Assist in the supervision of students who are assigned to an in-school time-out as part of our discipline program.

Afterschool Enrichment, 21st Century program: Doug Tavis who is in charge of this program is seeking volunteers who could help with after school enrichment opportunities for students. It could be helping with homework or teaching students how to play chess or paint a picture...whatever talents you have that you could share. Contact Doug at 877-5463 ext. 105 for more information.

Teacher’s Assistant/Tutoring – Assist a classroom teacher.  Tasks vary by the needs of each teacher.

Exploratory Activities – Lead a small group 7th and 8th grade students in a mini-class you design during our exploratory period.

Creative and Visual Arts and Music – Lead students in a mini-class you design in cooperation with staff.

Technology Assistance – Assist our staff in addressing a variety of technology needs.

School Care – Assist in keeping our school grounds clean and free of graffiti and trash.
