Reading Buddies
Cross-age tutoring is happening at many levels this year at HCS. In the picture above 7th and 8th graders from Mr. Keith's class are reading with their 1st/2nd grade reading buddies in Ms. Queen's class. 6th graders read with the other primary students and 4th graders read with Kindergartners. It's fun to see all the enthusiasm for reading being shared and crossage friendships developed.

Increases in Technology at Hood Canal School

This year with the help of a generous donation from a resident in Union, our school has been able to increase our level of access for students and have been able to provide much needed upgrades of our equipment. (The school district was named as a benefactor in the will of this local resident).

As a result, this year our school district was able to purchase 200 newer computers from the Issaquah School District. These have replaced many of our older donated computers as well as providing additional work stations for our students. Additionally, we were able to purchase 60 new flat screen monitors to replace many older, bulky monitors. We also purchased a mobile cart of 24 wireless laptops and added a part-time technology specialist to provide instruction to our students on a weekly basis on how to use these tools effectively to support their learning. Finally, the Hood Canal Education Foundation purchased 20 new printers for our school and all of our classrooms now have their own printer for students and teachers to use.

Thank you to the community for your continued support of our school district and our educational programs. You are making a difference in our school.

NEW:Please see the link below from the Office of the Education Ombudsman regarding how public school districts in Washington are operated. It is a great summary.

Lemonade Sale

After reading the book"Lemonade for Sale" the 2nd graders held their own lemonade sale in the hallway during lunch and during conferences. The money they raised is going towards buying Thanksgiving turkeys for needy families. Roll mouse over this image to see another pix.

Netbooks have arrived
Our students in all grade levels (K-8) will receive instruction each week from our newly hired technology skills instructor, Annette Stoddard. This is a great new beginning for Hood Canal School students as they learn and prepare for the future by gaining necessary skills for success and work to meet the state standards in technology. It is an exciting day at Hood Canal School.
